Memorial Day Weekend Festivities

I don't know about all of you, but Memorial Day weekend really took a toll on me. We started off  by celebrating a friend's birthday on Friday night, then went south to my roommate's lake for the day, followed by the Indy 500, and finally ended with another fun filled day soaking up sun at Geist Lake. Needless to say I was exhausted and really had no time or energy to blog the past couple of days. But after a little R&R, loads of laundry, and much needed phone time with my dad, I'm back in action. Here are some snapshots of my non-stop weekend - hope you enjoy!

Did anyone do anything fun over the weekend? Now that I'm back to reality I'd love to hear all about it!

Have a great Thursday and stop by tomorrow for some fancies!

{Friday's Fancies} Memorial Day

Memorial Day Wear

Happy Friday! I'm so freakin excited the weekend is almost here! We all know Monday was a rough start for me, but with all of your LOVELY comments and encouraging words {especially to drink wine} I was able to get through it with a smile on my face. Thank you!

For me personally, this weekend isn't about relaxing. It's about hanging out with my friends celebrating birthdays, going to the lake, and attending the Indianapolis 500 race! For those of you who are unaware, the Indy 500 is a 500 mile race {equaling 200 laps} with over 400,000 people in attendance within the stands and infield. I know it's one of the biggest sporting events in the world, but not sure where it ranks and all that jazz {click here for some light reading on the event}. This is my third year going, but first year having actual seats and getting to see the race. Hopefully I'll get some pictures, but I don't plan on bringing my DSLR toy mostly because I don't trust myself nor need any extra weight in my purse!

During the first race I quickly learned you don't wear black. Even if it is a super lightweight romper, you don't wear black. I'm from Arizona and can handle heat, but I was melting in the 90 whatever and humid sun. I've learned light layers and a bathing suit is the way to go this entire weekend, so I've put together examples of what my outfits will most likely consist of, give or take:

//lake wear// I love the nautical look! Being a Delta Gamma, I'm definitely fond of sailor stripes and anything with an anchor on it. The lake is the perfect place to channel your inner sailor with a cute, lightweight romper, nautical colored bikini, metallic boat shoes, and anchor accessories. I tend to leave my watches at home in fear of getting a gnarly watch tan, but little stud earrings are the perfect accessory for the occasion. If you really need the arm swag, try layering with colorful friendship bracelets!

//Indy 500// Like I said, the color black is not your friend when attending the outdoor race. I prefer to wear a swim suit and throw on a sheer little number, like a dress or the vest above. Jean shorts are a staple at this event whether you're trying to go for the white trash "jorts" look or not. I recommend a cross body bag to free up your hands for beer bongs and hot dogs as well as chucks {or even boat shoes} to keep all the beer puddles off of your feet. I plan on wearing my new fedora from H&M in order to keep the sun off of my face since we'll be there from morning until night.

For both occasions I will be slathering on sunscreen every hour or so and I suggest you do the same if you're outside all weekend too! I like to eat lobster, not be one. If you need more inspiration for Memorial Day weekend, head on over to {longdistanceloving} and check out the other bloggers who've linked up!

Have a wonderful and safe weekend! Eat, drink, and be merry! Happy Indy 500 and Memorial Day!!

Guacamole

Memorial Day is this weekend, so that means lots of eating and drinking is in my near future. It's apparent I love to cook great food for myself, but I really enjoy cooking for my friends and family more! Whether it's a side dish, appetizer, or an entire meal, nothing makes me happier than rave reviews, smiling faces, and full tummies.

A quick and easy guacamole recipe is sure to be a crowd pleaser for any occasion. Use it as a traditional dip or slap some on your hamburger {or even hot dog} for a fire meal! Just know that it won't last long, especially around drunk and hungry people. Feel free to tweak this recipe by leaving out unwanted items {onions are a common dislike among my friends...crazy, I know} or add different ingredients to change it up! It'll hit the spot either way - enjoy!
{Scoop the avocado goodness into a bowl & start mashing}
{Add all ingredients & mix it up}
{Serve the guac in individual bowls & top with tortilla scoops}
{Enjoy}

Pretty sure I learned this from my Dad

{Makes 1 batch}

Ingredients: 5 avocados, halved. 3 Tbsp lime juice. 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and chopped. 1/2 medium red onion, diced. 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced.1/4 Cup cilantro, chopped. 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes. 1/2 tsp ground cumin. Salt & pepper to taste.

Directions:
  • Your avocados are halved already, correct? Now, cup the halved avocado {with the pit} in your hand and using a sharp knife, strike the pit of the avocado with tip of the knife. Give it a little twist and the pit should pop right out; discard into the trash. Continue until all pits have been removed.
  • Scoop the insides of each halved avocado into a mixing bowl. Add the lime juice; mash together with a large spoon or mortar.
  • Add tomatoes, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, red pepper flakes, ground cumin, salt/pepper to the avocado mash; mix all ingredients together.
  • Serve in a large bowl or scoop some into smaller bowls and top with chips for individual servings.

Again, feel free to go light or heavy on some of the ingredients listed {e.g. I LOVE cilantro and use A LOT}. Hope you all have a happy weekend!!

Broad Ripple Art Fair

Sunday morning, my mom and I meandered around the Broad Ripple Art Fair in the hot HOT sun. Rows of beautiful artwork and the sweet aroma of kettle corn filled the park. If I had oodles of dollars to spend on oil paintings and pottery, then I would have snatched up a lot of items. Unfortunately, almost everything I wanted was waaayyy out of my price range. The heat was pretty brutal, so we only lasted about an hour before heading to Brugge Brasserie for crepes, mussels, and cold beer. It was a nice way to spend some time with my Mama before heading to a bar to watch the Pacers game with friends. Here's a little photo diary of the day, starting at the Art Fair and ending with awesome food.
{The Vintage Painter had some fun oil paintings I would have LOVED to splurge on}
{Butter dishes and spoon rests by Deckas Pottery}
{Stackable art}
{Pottery by Deckas Pottery}
{Gorgeous ornaments full of texture and color}
{Beautiful stained glass pieces were everywhere}
{Musical entertainment at its finest}
{He used his shell covered legs as a type of tambourine}
{Interesting lawn decorations by Girly Steel}
{Invasion of steel dragon flies}
{These lawn sculptures reminded me of late night dancing, especially with my good friend Claire}
{Mine and my mom's favorite piece, a bird bath with a meditation topper}
{Frites with horseradish and sweet chili dipping sauces}
{Their blue cheese and bacon mussels are to DIE for}

Big thanks to the artists for allowing me to snap a few pictures! I appreciate your cooperation and loved your work!

Fringe at the Symphony

//symphony// Dress: Lush / Heels: F21 / Clutch: Unknown / Necklace: F21 / Bracelets: Gift, H&M, Vintage /

{Note: please excuse my complete clearness. I really need to keep up on my Jergens gradual tan lotion}

This is the fringe dress I gushed about a few weeks ago {see here}. My love for fringe started in college with my best friend Jenn. She came back from London with an adorable little purple fringe Topshop dress, among many other fabulous pieces. She let me wear it to one of our sorority sister's 1920's themed birthday party filled with sake bombs and bad choices. Pretty sure I danced the night away to "Cyclone" while fringe swayed whipped forcefully back and forth. It was the perfect dancing {or as my boyfriend likes to call it, twirkilating} dress, however, the looped fringe kept getting caught on things. Thankfully I didn't do much damage, or at least I don't think I did. If so, I'm sorry Jenn and you can borrow this dress when we reunite in a few weeks.

Anyyywaayysss, I was afraid to buy a fringe dress of my own because of the potential mishaps, but when I saw this little number all lonesome on the sale rack I couldn't help but fall for it. It's fringe is straight, not looped. It's delicate layers of lace make it even sweeter. The color is a tad off for the current season, but paired with bohemian accessories like peacock feathers and turquoise arm candy, I think it fits right in.

I wore this last week to Happy Hour at the Symphony with my boyfriend, his parents, and their family friends. Time for Three {Tf3} is an amazing string trio with innovative compositions and fun performances. I wish I had my program to tell you the exact songs/mash ups that occurred, but their entire performance was beautiful. I do remember they played their new song "Banjo Love", which consisted of picking at their instruments most of the time in a quirky and inviting way. They ended with an awesome performance of Mumford and Sons "Little Lion Man" and the entire crowd roared with excitement. Not only are they talented in what they do, they have great stage presence and leave you wanting more. It was honestly the best performance I've been to and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next season. In the meantime, we'll sub our Happy Hour dates for the Marsh Symphony on the Prairie starting next month. Sprawling out on a soft blanket while eating fancy finger sandwiches, drinking wine, and listening to beautiful music is currently on my mind.

Insta-Fun #10

Well, my Monday has not started off on the right foot. However, after the day I had on Friday, I was well aware I'd be on edge/want to scratch my eyes out today. I admit I can be quite the control freak, but in my line of work if policies and procedures are not followed, the consequences can be pretttyyy bad. Maybe a sushi lunch {even to-go} will be the cure to my Monday madness. If I can't make it out, then right after work I'm cracking open a bottle of wine. Yes, it's 9am and I'm already thinking about wine. At least I don't keep a chilled bottle under my desk. Now that's when I'd say you should start to worry. Before signing off, here's some of my favorite pictures from last week via Instagram. Enjoy!
{Inspired by Lisa on Instagram, I decided to pull out my oxfords
for the day}
{Happy Hour at the Symphony was phenomenal this
 week! Time for Three killed it as usual!}
{Felt a little bohemian in this top and necklace}
{Inspired by Friday's Fancies last week, my oversized
chambray top came out to play}
{Saturday arrangement}
{Bourbon, bacon, and maple syrup ice cream from Lick via the
Broad Ripple Farmer's Market. It was good, but it
needed chocolate fudge and less bacon.}

I'll post about my weekend, specifically Sunday, later this week. Don't forget to follow me on Instagram {click here} for more lifestyle photos so you're not missing out!

Have an awesome Monday for me!

{Friday's Fancies} Chambray

The Chambray - 4 Ways

TGIF. TGIF. TGIFFFF!!! This week has been suppperrr busy and today was definitely no exception. I felt like a chicken with my head cut off at work today and couldn't be more happy that it's the freakin weekend. Can I get an amen?!?!

This week, we were asked to focus our Friday's Fancies post around the one and only, chambray. I decided to focus on the ever-so-versatile chambray shirt. I used this specific chambray button down in my FF post a couple weeks back {see here}. It can be worn with so many pieces, in so many ways. So if you don't own one, after reading this head on over to the mall and pick one up - you won't regret it! I put together four different ways you can style it by dressing it up and dressing it down.

//Dress it up// It's best to attack this shirt as if it were a white button down, which as you know goes with everything. Tuck it into a pencil skirt for work and pair with colorful heels and a sparkly statement necklace to give the outfit some extra pizzazz. For a more modest look, try buttoning the top all the way up and wearing the necklace under your collar for just a hint of sparkle. If you're heading out for a GNO, try pairing it with sparkly shorts and colorful accessories for a more playful look!

//top left// Pencil SkirtHeelsSparkly Necklace//top right// Sequin shortsHeelsEarringsBracelets.

//Dress it down// If you're brave enough, tuck the button up half way in {see Blair Eadie's look here} to some dark denim cut offs. It's a full on blank denim canvas, so feel free to add lots of color with a tote, heels, and any jewelry you desire. On the contrary, you can wear a maxi skirt and tie up your chambray top to show a little midriff {see Jessica Quirk's here}. This creates a relaxed look with just a hint of sexiness. Try it, you're sexy and you know it.

Pacers Work Wear

 //work wear// Sweater, Skirt, Necklace: F21 / Heels: Kelsi Dagger / Watch: Michael Kors /

I've never been a big basketball fan, but since moving to the Midwest I've found myself attending and watching more basketball games than ever before. A while back I did a feature on how to wear colored denim, specifically at a Pacers game {see here}. The boyfriend really liked that post, so I wanted to do something similar since the Pacers are currently in the playoffs {they play the Heat tonight at 7pm EST}.

I always receive company-wide emails asking us to support our Pacers by wearing blue or Pacers attire on game days. I'm not one for wearing NBA gear, so I got a little creative with items I already own. Showing my support for the Indiana Pacers while still staying true to my personal style was my main goal here. I love a good blue and yellow combination any given day, but of course this is fitting for the circumstances. It's professional, modest, and bold which is a winning combination for work wear. The thick stripes, oversized watch, and jeweled necklace keep the outfit interesting without going overboard.

What do you think, do you like the combination for work? Do you try and incorporate your team's colors into your work outfits?

Mother's Day + Hangover

I know, I know Mother's Day is over and done with, but I wanted to share some pictures from Sunday spent with my family here in Indiana. My mom and step-dad moved here from Arizona my freshman year of college, so that's kind of what brought me out this way. Well, that and a full-time job with great pay and benefits. Not to mention my brother and sister-in-law live in Indiana as well. It's nice to have family in unfamiliar places and a "home" to run to when needed.

We spent the evening eating {duhhh} and taking pictures with my new toy. My mom was kind enough to snap a few outfit photos of me and they turned out better than I expected. Why?? Well, this girl was huuunnngovvver! The wedding Saturday night did me over pretty good. Free beer and wine is always a dangerous combination. So for me to have taken a shower, apply makeup, AND put on normal clothes is just crazy talk. I'm pretty wrinkly in the pictures, but that's what I get for being hunched over in fetal position. Just kidding - kind of.
